A student who claims Google AI Plus through a personal gmail.com account receives a student price inside Google’s Personal Accounts category. The account continues to use personal Google terms, personal Gemini data controls, and personal compute limits.

Google’s Education and Personal AI offerings comparison, updated 20 August 2026 and checked on 28 August 2026, places “Google AI Plus (Free of charge for students, personal gmail.com accounts only)” in the Personal Accounts columns. The same chart assigns those columns Google terms, says data may be used for model training, and applies compute-based limits.

The billing calendar for the 12-month student offer is covered separately in Google’s student-offer exit alarm. This guide focuses on account terms, data handling, and quota shape.

Personal Gmail: Keep Activity narrows future-chat use

The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, checked on 28 August 2026, describes two relevant states:

  • With Keep Activity on, Google uses saved activity to provide, develop, and improve services, including training generative AI models, with help from human reviewers.
  • With Keep Activity off, future chats stay out of AI-model training unless the user submits feedback. Google retains those chats with the account for 72 hours to respond, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public.

Several surrounding controls remain relevant. Gemini settings do not control the processing used to create anonymized data for improving Google services. Google may still use chats for safety with help from human reviewers. Audio and Gemini Live videos or screenshares have a separate improvement control; that control is off by default.

These controls reduce the training path for future personal chats. Confidentiality decisions should still follow the data owner’s policy, contract, and approved tools.

The quota also follows the Personal Accounts column. The comparison PDF says personal limits factor in prompt complexity, model or feature choice, and chat length. It states: “Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit.” Google also warns that limits can change with demand and capacity.

Workspace for Education: managed-account protections

Google’s Workspace with Gemini FAQ for Education, updated 21 August 2026 and checked on 28 August, says all Education editions can use the Gemini app as a core service with enterprise-grade data protections. It lists Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, Education Plus, and Google AI Pro for Education.

Users accessing Gemini through those editions are subject to the Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service. The FAQ says their chats and uploaded files “won’t be reviewed by human reviewers or otherwise used to improve generative AI models.” It gives the same protection to uploads, queries, and responses in Gemini Notebook as a Core service.

For a person with a Google AI Pro for Education license, the FAQ publishes 1,000 uses per month across the Gemini app and Workspace-with-Gemini features. The counter resets on the first day of each month. The comparison PDF describes other Education limits as a set number of prompts and uses per feature and gives the paid education add-on priority access when capacity is constrained.

School administrators still control access and license assignment. Check the signed-in domain and the Admin console status before placing school-governed material in Gemini.

Google’s Generative AI in Google Workspace Privacy Hub treats user prompts as customer data under the Cloud Data Processing Addendum. It says Workspace does not use customer data to train models without the customer’s prior permission or instruction and points to the Training Restriction in the Workspace Service Specific Terms.

The user-facing Workspace data-protection guide says Gemini in Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Docs, Drive, Sheets, Slides, Meet, and Vids uses Workspace content to answer prompts and does not use that content to train or improve Gemini or other generative AI models.

Account mixing changes the path. The same guide says Workspace data shared through a personal account with Gemini Apps or Search services—including through screen actions and screenshots—is processed under those services’ terms and may be used for model training and improvement.
